United Nations Day
By Sharon Schweitzer
United Nations Day, October 24th, marks the anniversary of the entry into force in 1945 of the UN Charter. With the ratification of this founding document by the majority of its signatories, including the five permanent members of the Security Council, the United Nations officially came into being.
This year, the focus is on the 75th Anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), along with the theme “Equality, Freedom and Justice for All”.
The UDHR’s 75th Anniversary, UNA-USA’s theme for UN Day 2023, aims to celebrate the first universally protected fundamental human rights document. With its 30 articles, the UDHR serves as a constant reminder that human rights are universal, indivisible, and essential for a just and harmonious global community. It continues to inspire advocacy, promote accountability, and encourage the pursuit of a world where the rights and dignity of all individuals are upheld and protected.
On United Nations Day, there are no restrictions on what we can do. People from all over the world come together and celebrate with a number of different activities.
In some places, parades are organized to spread happiness among people from different countries. In other places, people may be invited to share their favorite meal with friends and family from different countries. The idea behind united celebration is that we should come together as one united people and celebrate our diversity, love for other cultures and religions.
Celebrating United Nations Day is a way of acknowledging this organization’s tireless work. Did you know that the UN feeds over 90 million people around the world? Also, they promote women and child health, and aid refugees who are escaping war. Have you ever been concerned about climate change? The UN also works to encourage sustainability and green practices.
